What excites me most about this system is that people can join for Free, share it with others, and make money. I think that is so awesome!

Wednesday on the Team Catalyst Daily Dose I talked about the art of conversation and using opening-up words that ask a person to go into his or her imagination and bring out something personal to show you.
Today I came across the article above that sheds more light on the subject of open and closed questions. We use questions every day when connecting with clients that may be looking at our opportunity. As Nicholas Boothman says in his book *how to Make People Like You in 90 seconds or less*, “questions are like the spark plugs of conversation.”. There are open and closed questions and we need to understand the difference between the two.
Friday Sept 23rd we will do another talk on the Team Catalyst Daily Dose Call on Questions and the use of them in conversation. I hope the calls and the article included in this post are helpful to you.

Do You Understand What REALLY Motivates You?

I've seen it happen many times with people in network marketing:

They will quit if they don't know their "WHY."

When they run into a speed bump, maybe it's a negative in-law or

something, and you have a 71% WHY, but you hit a 72% impediment,

it's all over.

Your ship just hit an ice burg and your going down with it

But when you have a "Rock Solid" WHY out in front of you, you will

never, never quit. A new business is always a risk. People risk to avoid pain,

or to achieve pleasure.

Answering these questions may help you find your "WHY".

* What gets you REALLY excited?
* How many hours a week do you work?
* What do you LOVE about your job?
* What do you HATE about your job?
* What do you do with your free time?
* If you had 2 months vacation and all the money you wanted, what would you do?
* How do you like the people you work with?
* What problem scares you to death that more money could solve?
* What do you just absolutely HATE about your life that more money could solve?
* If you had all the money you needed, what HUGE problem would go away?
* If you had all the TIME in the world to do anything you wanted, what would you do?

Here's a starting point.

The #1 reason I am in this business, that I'm here on this planet, is because I LOVE my family

and I LOVE helping others. It's who I am. When my husband passed of cancer, I took my Mom

out of the nursing home so I could take care of her with dignity. She is going to be 94 this Sept.

I want to spend more quality time with each of my family members as well as give my 93 year young

Mother the very best of care for the rest of her days here on earth. My burning desire is to get my dream RV

and travel with the Care-a-Vanners with Habitat for Humanity. I feel in LOVE with this kind of volunteering

when I went to Costa Rica for two weeks with a Volunteer Mission Team through my church.

I figure with an RV I won't need a house to be encumbered by and I can follow the sun and help

build houses along the way.

For me, the rewards of MLM have allowed me to build a better relationship with my Mom and with my adult

children. This freedom has given me the ability to go and do things that I never dreamed possible, like zip lining

in Belize and taking Mom on her first cruise.

Life is good when you get to do the things that make life really worthwhile.

Relationship Building - #1 Key To Network Marketing Success

Building a relationship is the #1 key to any Network Marketing endevor. Here are some tips that will ensure success.

Talk to your front-line leaders regularly. At least every other day. Sometimes it's 2 or 3 times a day.
Make yourself available anytime for 3-way phone calls.
Give your team a system to help them find the people and sponsor them into your business.
Make yourself available.

Here's what it's about.
No matter what! When you build a strong relationship with your sponsor and they with you, you know they will be there
No Mater What! When my husband passed in 2009, a sideline team menber came to the funeral to represent the team and give me support. How awesome is that! If that was not enough, my sponsor invited me to stay a week at her house to regroup. Now that will never happen if you fail to build that know, like and trust relationship.

The Mistake That Many Leaders Make
People are telling their downlines all the time,

"You have to change.
You have to get out there and sell.
You have to become this other person that you aren't right now."

The truth is, YOU are perfect just like you are.
Everybody on your team is perfect just like they are.

They don't need to change.
They don't need to become a pushy, aggressive salesperson.

Ninety-two per-cent of the world's population is sales resistant.
You don't like to be sold. You walk into a store, looking for shoes. You want to look around, pick out what YOU want. You don't want some sales clerk coming around, telling you they have a sale on such & such a shoe. You want to shop & buy what YOU want. Maybe you'll ask for a clerk, once you've decided what you want.
So it's only about 5% of the people in network marketing who tell the others that they have to change, they have to become this pushy, aggressive salesperson, make a list of your friends & family and go puke all over them, force them into the business.That Is NOT How To Build Your Business!

Take The Volunteers:
My belief is, just target the market and find people who already are looking for the business, people who already believe in network marketing. Don't go out and try to build them a dream to get them in the business.
Talk to the people who already believe, and are looking. Those people are warriors. Those people are ready to take action. Those people will build an empire. They will build a legacy income for you. Those are the kind of people who will drive 6 hours to your house and cut down a tree for you.
Those are the people you want. Build relationships with those people. Get them into your business, and never, never, never quit building the relationship with them!
I hear so-called heavy hitters talking about building relationships. But the truth is, they don't have a relationship with their spouse, they don't have one with their kids, and they don't have one with their business partners. They rattle on about relationships, but they don't know how to build one.

Bulletproof Your Income!
What if your company went out of business tomorrow? Don't laugh - it has happened to many, many people in this business. What would you do? Would you have to start over from scratch?
Well - NOT if you have strong trusting relationships with your people! If you have taken the time and made the effort to build that steel-ribbed "know, like, & trust," then your people will stick with you. They will follow you to your next company. They will trust in your judgment.
If you haven't built those relationships, your future is very much in doubt. Why take that chance? Work hard at getting close to every person in your group. That's a strategy that will pay off for you big-time, whether your current company is around forever or not.

Trying To Sell Absolutely Does Not Work!
Ninety-two per-cent of the world's population - like you and me - is sales resistant. They don't like to sell. They don't like to be sold. You go into a store, looking for a shirt or a pair of shoes, the sales clerk comes up, what do you say?
"I'm just looking."
People do not want to be sold. And then you get into network marketing and some upline superstar space commander guru leader tells you, "OK. Start by making a list of your friends & family." And the plan is to turn YOU into that pushy, aggressive salesperson that nobody likes.
Selling does not work in this business. Even if you're one of the 8% of the population who can do it, you'll never be able to duplicate, because 92% of the people who join you simply will not sell.
I go on websites and see brand new companies TODAY, and their "training" is, "Make a list of your friends & family." That's what the industry did 50 years ago. Today is a new day.
You can't be successful trying to sell. Instead -
- You Have To Really Target Your Market
Find prospects who have raised their hand, and build relationships with those people. People buy from people they know, like, & trust. You have to build that relationship.

Setbacks, Mistakes, Backslides and Old Habits

I don't know about you, but I can sure relate to Laurie's article above.
I can't count how many times I have had everything planned out for the day,
leave the house and about two blocks or more, discover that I have forgotten
something. It does, for a moment, set my mind to racing for a decision of what
to do next.....Panic! Will it set me back, stop me in my tracks, make me late, spoil
my day? It will do what I let it do! I am in control of my day and the end result.

A great question to ask yourself is, can I live with out it for now? Most of the time
the answer is yes. Setbacks, mistakes, backslides and old habits, speed bumps I like
to call them, they can get in my way if I let them. If I focus on the my desired end
result and keep moving forward I get back on track and don't look back. Life goes on
and I can make every day the best day if I choose to ....or I can let that speed bump

How Do I Know If My Network Marketing Company Has Integrity?

Our afternoon Leaders call the other day was full of powerful information about why you need to read your company Policies & Procedures.

In 27 years in network marketing, my Mentor Michael Dlouhy, has learned the #1 feature you must have in place for success and that is:

Company management experience with integrity.

People will ask me , "How do I know if my company has integrity?"

The answer is simple: read your company Policies & Procedures. If you can't find them on the website, it's a big red flag. Some companies say you can't read them until after you join. Big red flag.
How Do I Know If My Network Marketing Company Has Integrity?

Why are they ashamed of their P&Ps? Why don't they want you to read them? The P&Ps are YOUR contract to be in business with them - written by the company lawyers! Every time any distributor ever gets a termination letter, it says, "You have violated the Policies & Procedures." They never say you violated "Terms & Conditions." It's always "Policies & Procedures."

Most reps never actually read their P and P's. You need to do it ... it may really open your eyes. At least you'll know exactly what to look for and how to protect yourself.

MLM Sponsoring Secrets - A Proven, Tested 5-Step System

I've learned over the last few years that to grow your network marketing business you need to do and have certain things in place that are without a shadow of doubt, duplicatable. They are:

1. Targeted lead generation

2. Automated prospect follow-up

3. One-on-one relationship building

4. Sponsoring and

5. Training

If you have a single system to perform all these functions, so much the better. If your MLM company or upline group does not provide system(s) to accomplish these targets, you absolutely have to set them up yourself. But it's a lot easier to go someplace where they understand these MLM sponsoring secrets and already have an established, tested & proven system.

Let me tell you a bit about each aspect of the sponsoring system that I use.

1. Targeted lead generation. Why do you want to build the dream for somebody else? How do you think you're ever going to make somebody have a dream? You only want to talk to people who ALREADY have the dreams, the goals, the desire to be successful.

Don't put yourself in the position where you have to convince somebody to get up off the couch, turn off the TV, quit watching the football game and drinking beer. Leave those people alone. They need to do that stuff. We need people in our lives and in this world who do that. Let them do that.

ONLY talk to people who have the goals, dreams, desires. These are the warriors. These are the people who will build the business, no matter what. Target THOSE people. Then your business will be fun & exciting. You'll have massive duplication when you work with targeted people.

How do you find them?

You want a lead generation system that brings you ONLY the most qualified people. A lead who is a reader is far more likely to have long-term network marketing success than most other leads you get. That is who you must target.

How? You promote a website that has only one objective: capture contact information. So when a visitor comes to your site, their only options are signing up or leaving. And you do your best to make them an offer they cannot refuse. I prefer to offer a great ebook because, again, Leaders are Readers.

2. Automated prospect follow-up. The secret in network marketing is following up with people. People are busy. Our lives are busy. It's best to have an automated email system going out to these prospects. You need one written by a professional copywriter who knows how to tweak the mind, answer questions, create a relationship in print. You want your automated follow-up to create a relationship with ad copy.

It's mandatory that you have a system in place to follow-up with people automatically, so you don't have to do it. Because guess what?

You might be on vacation, on a company-sponsored, company paid-for, week-long trip to Italy. You need an automated follow-up system.

3. One-on-one relationship building: your most important MLM sponsoring secret. Network marketing is a relationship business. You want to sponsor them one at a time and bring them in one at a time.

The only way you can do that is to build a one-on-one relationship with those people.

I've seen organizations come online and they sponsor, sponsor, sponsor, recruit, recruit, recruit, using some downline building system. But none of those people ever upgrade, none of those people ever buy product, because there's no relationship. If you ever tried to call one of those people and say, "Hey, I'd like to visit with you -", they won't even return a phone call.

So it's most important to have relationships when you're building the business. They've got to know that you care.

This step is crucial, so we're constantly training people to do it. I do a live, generic MLM "relationship-building" training call 5 nights a week. No company is EVER mentioned on these calls. No products are EVER discussed.

You'll get to listen in while I work with other callers, talking to their leads, too. You can bring your lead phone numbers to that call, if you want, and we'll call them together. You‚Äôll hear exactly what to say. We‚Äôll establish that they‚Äôre definitely looking for a good way to make extra money from home. Then we‚Äôll set a time for you to call them back to talk more in depth about YOUR opportunity.

And I promise you, if you build people, then people will build your business.

4. Sponsoring. Wow! I love that word, "sponsoring." See, I take that word differently than most people. Why?

Because I take YOUR success personally.

When I'm your sponsor, I'm your sponsor for life. Some day I'll be going to your funeral, or you'll be going to mine. If I'm your sponsor, that is the way it is. You & I will be in business together the rest of our lives, that's how committed I am to my business and to your success.

So wouldn't you rather sponsor people that you want to associate with? My mentor told me, "Only sponsor people that you'd want to go on a 1-month cruise with."

Wow! How important is that? Don't just sponsor somebody who can fog a mirror. ONLY sponsor people who you really want to build a business with.

5. Training. Absolutely the lifeblood of your business is teaching, training, coaching & mentoring new people on how to do network marketing.

You'd better have a team website. You'd better have a step-by-step Action Plan. You've got to train them.

They need to learn the skills of how to do MLM. That's critical in the training process. You can train a dog. But for people, you have to teach them the skills they need to do this business.

Ninety-two per-cent of the world's population is sales resistant. They don't like to sell, don't like to be sold. So don't waste your time studying about the superduper elixir drink, where the ingredients are scraped off the rock by blind leprechauns every other full moon. Don't study the product ingredients.

Study people. Learn our "Color To Success" training. You'll learn how to listen to people, and you will own your business, and you will own your life.

You can just plug your people right into our training system, and the cycle begins again.

This is what you call a "Greased Chute". Step 1 flows smoothly into Step 2. Step 2 into Step 3. Step 3 into Step 4. Step 4 into Step 5. And step 5 into Step 1.

And so on and so on.

The term 'greased chute' means there are NO bumps along the way. No impediments, nothing whatsoever to even slightly slow the flow of a prospect from one step to the next.

To be long-term successful, you MUST have a 'greased chute' marketing system for your opportunity. I love ours because it offers total training in the skills of working with people, so that you get better and better ‚ and your people can plug into exactly the same system, making it far easier for you to help them as you gain more & more experience.

EVERY Olympic athlete has a coach. The top ones hire their own personal coach.

I've had my own mentor-coach in network marketing since 2007. True, not so very long ago, I was wondering around the network marketing arena not knowing what I was doing and failing miserably. One person actually told me he thought it was a weakness for people to admit that you need a coach to help you.

A weakness???

I believe that having a coach is one of the smartest things I have ever done.

A coach keeps you accountable and focused. There are just soooooo many opportunities in life to get sidetracked.

Pro athletes like Tiger Woods, Bobby Bonds, Peyton Manning, all the big stars, have several coaches. Each coach teaches their own specialty.

How To Choose A Coach

I raised four children and when I needed advice about children I asked someone who had children. Not someone who's graduated from college with 3 or 4 degrees and never had a child.I would talk to someone who has raised a couple healthy, happy kids?

Who would you want to get your coaching from? Somebody who has experienced it, or somebody who hasn't?

Many of the coaches today in network marketing have never built an organization. Or they built it 10, 15 years ago, but they can't build it today.

As the old saying goes, "if you can't do, teach."

So these network marketing coaches go out and teach people how to do what they can't do. What they did 10 years ago worked 10 years ago. But it doesn't work today.

So instead of being on the cutting edge of technology and learning (and USING!) the state-of-the-art in network marketing business-building, they hold themselves up as a coach!

I've even seen one coach who shows you his huge downline geneology. If you look closely, you'll notice it's from 12 years ago. He hasn't done anything since.

If you're going to be coached, you want to be coached by somebody who is doing it NOW, someone who is active today.

It's crazy, but there are even "coaches" who promote it as a virtue that they no longer do network marketing. They'll tell you that you don't need to worry about them recruiting you into some other business.

Here is the truth: there's a lot more money in network marketing than there is in coaching - IF you can actually do network marketing, AND you can do the coaching anyway, while you're building your business.

So why isn't this person in network marketing anymore?

Easy. It's because they can't do it. Plain and simple, they can't build it.

It is completely insane to choose as your coach someone who is not currently successful at network marketing. You are being ripped-off, plain and simple.

I've even talked to a couple of these "unbiased" network marketing coaches who actually don't like network marketing. They don't believe in it. Yet they will gladly take your money to coach you to success in network marketing!

One more thing - 90% of these coaches tell you that YOU have to change. They say you have to get out of your comfort zone, become this "A" type personality. And THAT is the reason it doesn't work.

Those "A" personalities can go out and do anything and be successful at it. But 92% of the world can't do that. And when you go out there telling them they have to change, it's no wonder there's such a high failure rate in network marketing.

Here's what I think:

1. You're perfect just the way you are.

2. You need belief in yourself, belief in the business.

3. Learn some skills.

4. Take action.

And to coach somebody in network marketing, the biggest thing they need coaching on is their belief. They don't believe in the industry, their company, or themselves.

Most top business people have (or once had) a true mentor, someone who's done it before and knows what to do. The person with a mentor has a big advantage. The Network Marketing "Spillover" Myth

A caller recently told my good friend and mentor, Michael Dlouhy, that he's joining an MLM company because they promised him spillover. Michael said, "They are lying to you!"

The guy called, back later and said, "I point-blank asked them if I'd get people put underneath me, and the guy said, "Well, we can't guarantee that.'"

Spillover - Creating a Welfare Mentality

Good people don't want welfare. They want to build it themselves. They just want to learn the skills they need to build this business and create residual income, money that's coming in week after week, year after year, and they can will it to their children's children.

When you look at a lot of network marketing websites, you often see that word "spillover." The proposition, more or less, is, "get in now, today, and you'll get all this spillover."

In 27 years, Michael say's he has never, ever, ever seen anybody get spillover, having somebody build it for them.

And if you look closely at the compensation plans of the companies that promote spillover, you'll find out that those who get spillover usually don't get paid on it. There are other hoops to jump through to get paid on that spillover, and these people rarely ever qualify.

So it's the person who actually does the work who gets the pay, what a novel idea!

Companies & reps use "spillover" as a tool to drag in people who think they can build a business without doing any work. In other words, no sponsoring, no recruiting. It targets that type of person.

When You Say "Spillover", You Are Targeting Quitters!

When you see a network marketing company that promotes spillover on their website, they're looking for welfare-minded people. The problem for you is, you can't build with these people, unless YOU do all the work! That's what they expect. And when you don't build their business, they'll be off somewhere else, looking for a better welfare plan.

So really, when you or your company promote spillover, you are targeting people who will not be with you long-term. And in network marketing, that makes absolutely no sense. The failure rate will be 100%.

And Here's Why The Leads You Buy Tell You To Go Pound Sand!

The quickest way to build a huge list is to offer the moon and require nothing (no money, no work, no purchase) in return. You'll see companies promoting "we've signed up more people faster than anybody else in the history of network marketing." Problem is, there's nobody ordering any product. It's just a bunch of names on a list - but now they can call these people "network marketers."

Then they turn around and sell this huge database of worthless names (an "MLM geneology list") For $10,000 each to 10 different list brokers. BAM! That's $100,000 profit! And then the list brokers sell these "leads" to all the people in network marketing who want to build their business - including YOU!

So you pay $2-$3 a lead for these people, you call them up, and they tell you, "Hey! You‚are nuts! I've never been in network marketing!" They don't even know what it is. They just opted in to some pie-in-the-sky list, hoping to get something for nothing.

Conclusion? Run like heck from any company focused on "spillover" - and ALWAYS generate your own leads.

Network Marketing Success - Program Your Mind!

Your mind is being programmed everyday. Either you're doing it yourself, or somebody else is. If you're not in charge, then you'll really struggle for success in network marketing.

Are you letting the radio, the TV, the internet, the newspaper, or friends & family program you? If you are, then you are definitely being programmed for lack & limitation.

If you're in your car with the radio on, that radio has a tuner. You can tune in hundreds of radio stations. Those radio waves bombard you with negativity all day long. You are being programmed.

Do you turn the TV on and just leave it on while you're home? Again, you're getting constant programming. This stuff, at best, is trivial. At the worst, it's very, very negative.

And when you're programmed with negative garbage by radio & TV several hours a day, 7 days a week, 4 weeks a month, 12 months a year, year after year after year - it takes a toll. You develop a negative outlook on life and your MLM business - often without even knowing it.

Learn To Program Yourself

What happens with your mind, subconsciously, when negative friends & family members are talking to you? You are being programmed.

How Do You Stop The Negative Chatter In Your Brain?

That's my self-talk. When I'm doing the dishes, out for my daily walk, doing house work, and especially when a negative thought enters my head, I stop the negative thought in it's tracks and say my self-talk. Anytime I'm driving somewhere, that is my self-talk.

I have worked my way up to saying it at least 100-200 times a day. Now, the whole 32-word phrase is just a subconscious thing, repeating in my mind, over and over and over. It blocks out all the other chatter.

And the reason that's so powerful is, when you stop the chatter, you can truly, truly listen to people. And THAT is the skill that is so critical to your success in both business and personal relationships.

I will believe in you until you have the strength to believe in yourself.

What causes "overnight success" ?

Have you ever started a job or gone into a new profession without being trained?

A lot of kids love "Paint By Numbers" kits. You know the ones - a beautiful picture on the front of the box. Inside, you have 3 or 4 brushes, maybe 20 different little paint jars, and a board with numbers all over it - each number corresponding to one of the paint jars.

Then you just paint by numbers. You don't have to be an artist. Just follow the formula, You can create a pretty nice painting ... almost like you knew what you were doing.

Studies have shown that whether you're talking to someone on the phone, or in person, their impression of you & what you say is based ONLY ABOUT 8% on the words you use!!

The other 92% is your body language and the sound & qualities of your voice. I'm sure it's easy for you to understand that if you sound uncertain, no one is going to follow you. To be successful, you must sound and look like you know exactly what you are doing.

My MLM Story

First, let me ask you a question.

If you never had to go to work again, would
that be okay?

If you think like me, it's a loud YES!.... As long
as I get a paycheck. Well, that's what it's all
about, isn't it. How many people do you know
that are "trying" to make money on line? We all
know the J.O.B. just isn't the way to make money.

I was working two jobs and my husband was working
two jobs, we managed to get from one month to next
and then he was diagnosed with a terminal illness.

I got to thinking...this is no way to live and I wanted
to make the most of the time we had left together....

My job interfered with my life, I couldn't get the
time off I needed, and I spent hours commuting every
day.

So I decided to start some sort of home-based business so
I wouldn't have to spend all of my time at a job for the
rest of my life and my husbands life.

Now, I know, that you know, there are a ton of
opportunities on the internet that are willing to take
your hard earned money and sign you up as fast
as they can, promise you all kinds of pie in the
sky dreams of boo-coo bucks, say they will train
you and then disappear leaving you frustrated
and broke. Been there, done that!

One day as I was looking for reasons why the company
I had joined was not working for me,I found this
E book

So I got to thinking, what's going to be easier? Going to work
every weekday for the rest of my life, fighting traffic, warehousing
the kids in day care, begging for time off for vacations and missing
out on quality time with my husband?

How To Generate Leades for Your M-L-M Business

A lot of kids love "Paint By Numbers" kits. You know the ones - a beautiful picture on the front of the box. Inside, you have 3 or 4 brushes, maybe 20 different little paint jars, and a board with numbers all over it - each number corresponding to one of the paint jars.

Then you just paint by numbers. You don't have to be an artist. Just follow the formula, You can create a pretty nice painting ... almost like you knew what you were doing.

Market1ng is a lot like that. In market1ng, you track your ads and your results - your numbers. Then you try something else, and track your numbers again. Then you compare your numbers, and keep doing what works better.

The Questions Your Prospects Ask

It is key to make your network marketing business as duplicatable as possible. And the less you have to talk, the more duplicatable it gets. The ability to use the Success In 10 Steps E book and just point to sections that answer certain questions or to sections that would be valuable to people makes your life a lot simpler.

The format of the E book has been very successful. It's had over 107,000 downloads in the past 4 years. A lot of people have used STS to generate leads and build an MLM business. It is set up to make it easy for people to do network marketing. You don't have to be an expert at anything. You hardly even need to be able to answer any questions.

We know the 3 questions people most ask when they're looking for a business:

1. Is this something I can do?
2. Can I make money at it?
3. Can you help me?

For them to answer question #1 positively, the business has to be really simple. And it's important to show them that it's going to be simple for them to give this system to the people they bring into the business.

They may not be thinking that far ahead. But as soon as you point out to them that they have to be able to give THEIR prospects a simple system or their business will not duplicate, they know that is true.

On page 10 of STS, Michael Dlouhy talks about the 100 MLM companies that he joined. It's a good story that can answer several different questions.

Most of the people who download the STS E book are people who have already been in network marketing, but who have struggled with the business. They're looking for answers. They don't know why they haven't been successful. They know it's not because somebody else is smarter than they are. They are frustrated.

So Michael joined 100 different MLM businesses to kind of get an idea of how the whole thing works resonates with them. It makes sense to do that. And it helps give your prospect some background that helps them see all the value they can possibly get from reading this E book.

Page 10 is definitely one of the sections I would point out to prospects. Again, when you only need to point someone to a page in the book to answer their questions and gain credibility, it becomes obvious that this is a very easy business to do.

Boost Your Confidence

A lot of what determines success or failure is NOT the obvious stuff that you see and are concerned with.

Studies have shown that whether you're talking to someone on the phone, or in person, their impression of you & what you say is based ONLY ABOUT 8% on the words you use!!

The other 92% is your body language and the sound & qualities of your voice. I'm sure it's easy for you to understand that if you sound uncertain, no one is going to follow you. To be successful, you must sound and look like you know exactly what you are doing.

That is one of the reasons that this blog is so useful to you. The more time you spend learning about the intricacies of Success In 10 Steps, the more certainty you will have when you talk to a prospect. And as you study & gain the ability to direct them to a specific page that answers their question, you look to them like someone who really knows what they are doing.

And when they see you that way, it's a big key to their desire to work with you.

This is something you just cannot afford to shortcut. So open a new text file. Read Success In 10 Steps again, and take notes by chapter. Write down what strikes you as really memorable, really useful, and note the page it's on. Talk about it out loud. Tell what you really like. Again, write down your notes.

The better you get at this, the more confident you will sound when you speak with a prospect. When they can hear in your voice that you are certain you know what you're talking about, you are in good shape.

After 14 failed attempts at M-L-M, spending thousands of dollars for guru "secrets", Sarah Thompson was pretty discouraged.

After careful consideration, the Board of Directors of XELR8 has determined to pursue an alternative business model resulting in the discontinuation of our XELR8 Multilevel Marketing Program in its current form, and has asked me to inform all XELR8 Independent Distributors of this decision. As a result, the current XELR8 Compensation Plan will be terminated effective February 28, 2010, and you will be offered the ability to participate in a program to be announced on a national call on February 3, 2010. At that time you will be offered an attractive incentive for you to continue to enjoy XELR8 products as well as compensation for existing and new customers that you introduce to Bazi.

Although the current XELR8 Compensation Plan remains in effect until February 28, 2010, please be advised that no new Distributors may be enrolled as of the date of this letter. While you will no longer be able to enroll new Distributors, you, and your customers (both existing and new customers) may continue to order XELR8 products. Commission and bonus payments earned prior to the date of this letter will be paid according to the current XELR8 Compensation Plan. Commission and bonus payments earned after the date of this letter through February 28, 2010 will be paid on or about March 15, 2010. Following the payment of these commissions and bonuses, no further bonuses or commissions will be paid to any XELR8 Independent Distributor under the current XELR8 Compensation Plan.

Although the Company has elected to terminate the current multilevel marketing program, XELR8 products will continue to be available through Independent Distributors through February 28, 2010, and other direct marketing channels to be announced on our national call on February 3, 2010. If you are enrolled in our AutoShip program, you will continue receiving your monthly AutoShip order until such time as you elect to cancel your participation in the AutoShip program. Preferred Customers will also continue to receive their automatic monthly orders until such time as they choose to cancel their Preferred Customer Agreements. If you wish to cancel your monthly AutoShip order, please send your notice of cancellation to us at 480 South Holly Street, Denver, Colorado 80246. Alternatively, you may fax or email your notice of cancellation to us at (303) 316-8078 or support@xelr8.com. Please include your Distributor ID Number in your notice of cancellation.

As mentioned above, XELR8 intends to continue distribution of our products through Internet sales and other direct marketing channels. As our thanks to you for your support over the past several years, you will be offered the ability to enroll new customers after February 28, 2010 and receive compensation under a new compensation plan at a preferential compensation payout to be announced on February 3, 2010. What makes a leader?

Spotting MLM Cutthroats

At the bottom of page 11 of Success In 10 Steps, you see a reference to "greed and ego." That gives you another good point to make with your prospect.

Prospects don't come into this process thinking about "greed & ego". But if they have experience in MLM, there's a good chance they've already run into the problem. It's worthwhile pointing out that the greed & ego of sponsors and/or companies is one of the reasons so many prospects are never successful in network marketing.

Let them know how important it is to have their radar up and operating sensitively.

This doesn't mean you search for some Pollyanna who lives their life only for others. Putting yourself first is the natural order.

What it does mean is that you MUST avoid sponsors whose goal is to be successful no matter who they have to step on. You want someone who is determined to be successful by creating those win-win relationships with others.

A lot of times, you can actually hear this in their voice and in what they say about the business and about others. One of these clowns once told me that 95% of all prospects were dead wood, and he just kicked them out of the way. Not only was he proud of it, but he thought anyone who didn't do that was a fool. What more could you possibly need to know about this guy?

So you've got to watch and listen and train yourself to spot "greed & ego" before you join a company where you are smack-dab in the middle of it. Your best bet is definitely to avoid it from the start. Once you are in a group dominated by the greed and/or ego of its leader(s), you are lost. It's a situation you must train yourself to see and walk away from.

The ABCs of M/L/M (updated 2009)

What follows is from the legal perspective of an attorney who has had to defend M/L/M companies from regulatory scrutiny and attack. The creative genius of entrepreneurs is not discussed or highlighted in the following analysis. The marketing view is missing. The hype and the fluff and the attention-grabbing bells and whistles are left to be discussed by authors writing from a marketing perspective. This article does, however, take into account the internet and e-commerce. The laws in this area have not kept pace with technology, but technological advances have not suspended the application of the laws. When all extraneous twists and turns are scraped away, what is legally left needs to look something like this, or the M/L/M operation will not be allowed to continue long term in the United States or Canada.

A. The company brings a product or service to the marketplace that

1. is retailable, and

2. is being retailed, and

3. does not include a right to bring more participants to the company. A service that contains the right to bring customers to the company, like a shopping mall, can qualify, but not if it also contains the right to bring more income opportunity seekers (legally, “participants”) to the company. Multilevel income opportunities CANNOT be sold in the United States or Canada.

B. The product or service reaches the end user through efforts of direct sales representatives (independent contractors), rather than through traditional retail establishments or other channel of distribution choices like mail order or telemarketing. This channel definition is driven, not by any e-commerce techniques, but rather by the payment of money to an independent contractor for producing a result. Another characteristic of this channel is a lack of employees (involved in selling) to whom W-2s are issued but rather the presence of independent contractors to whom 1099s are issued.

C. The company’s compensation plan

1. is designed to reward representatives for the sales of the product or service they are involved in, and

2. includes an incentive and reward for the representative to be the “new representative finder” (legally, another “participant”) in the form of payment to a representative who introduces an additional representative to the company, BASED ON the sales volume of the second representative.

It is the presence of the design plan feature described in C2 above that subjects a single-level direct selling company to multilevel laws and regulations, whether or not the company chooses to use the term “multilevel” in its literature. Not all companies or distributors agree with this definition. I respect differing views. At the time of this writing, I am unaware of any regulatory agency in the United States or Canada who defines an M/L/M company substantially differently from what I have just stated. It is the compensation feature described in C2 above that brings the company under the microscope of regulatory scrutiny. A “participant” in the legal sense has the right to introduce another “participant.” If your rights stop at finding, introducing, locating, or selling to “customers,” you are not a “participant” in the legal sense, rather you are operating in the C1 portion of this analysis. Whether or not there are “participants” is very critical. The fact that you may receive a 1099 on the rewards of your efforts does not make you a “participant,” unless you also have the right to introduce others who also have the same 1099 potential. No amount of e-commerce manipulation or affiliate program wording can change this. Only legislatures can change laws, and they are notoriously slow to act.

Personal consumption by representatives is much discussed. A lot of it is good for the company’s bottom line, but too much of it is bad. How much is too much? One hundred percent personal consumption creates a presumption in the law and in the analysis of the business by regulators (in my view) that the only persons willing to buy the products or services are income opportunity seekers, and the amounts being paid are no more than disguised headhunting fees. Such payments are pyramidal and illegal.

“What percentage of sales to non-representatives do I need to be legal?” You do not want to ask the question, and you do not want it answered for you by government agencies. There are companies with very high percentages of “personal consumption” by their representatives that pose no risk of abuses, such as deceptive recruiting, inventory loading, or the “running out of people” pyramid risk. Also, an argument can be made that people who become representatives solely to buy products or services at wholesale, rather than retail, and who do not also buy for resale and do not sponsor, are customers, rather than income opportunity seekers. For the purpose of defending high amounts of personal consumption, an argument can be made that one does not become a “participant” in the legal sense until one introduces another participant, since only then can rewards flow based on the second participant’s sales volume. If all of the elements of the analysis above are present, the percentage of personal consumption by representatives should not matter. If the question is even raised, it usually means A1, A2, or C1 is missing or flawed. But I will not duck the question. My answer is this: Twenty percent of total sales to non-representatives should be sufficient to rebut any presumption. Of course, other pyramid tests would still apply. One reason I say this is because companies with very high personal consumption percentages have been going strong for ten years or more and pose no pyramid risk.

A1, A2, or C1 in the above analysis cannot be missing or flawed. C2 alone, without A1, A2, and C1, is deemed an endless chain and an illegal pyramid. If in the design or in the implementation of an M/L/M program all that is visible—all that the regulators see, all that is really happening—is income opportunity seekers who find more income opportunity seekers who find more income opportunity seekers, etc. (legally, “participants”), the regulatory end is near, sooner or later. The regulators, with or without specifically drafted laws, state their position simply—you run out of people.

So, since retailing is so essential, let’s examine it in more detail. What does “retailable” mean? It simply means “Will people buy my product or service?” The question appears almost too simple, so we need to be more specific about “people.” The “people” need to be people in a “customer” sense, rather than in an “income opportunity seeker” sense. There are hundreds of reasons why people will not buy products or services: They already have one; the cost is too high; they have no need or desire to own one; what is being sold is of poor quality; etc. The test here does not need to find a specific reason. If no one but income opportunity seekers buys the product or service, the presumption is raised that the product or service is not retailable, and A1 in the analysis is flawed. Look at traditional companies by comparison. If no one buys what they offer for sale, they are out of business. If the M/L/M company continues in business anyway, regulators presume the company is selling the right to sponsor yet more people. Federal and state laws prohibit selling the right to sponsor.

Once the retailability of the product or service is questioned, the risk of the MLM element of the compensation plan (C2 above) being attacked as illegal greatly increases. An argument can be made that people who become representatives solely to buy products or services at wholesale, rather than retail, and who do not also buy for resale and do not sponsor or refer, are customers, rather than income opportunity seekers.

Examining A2 in more detail, it differs from A1 primarily in the focus placed on retailing by both the company and its distributors. If the product or service is not retailable, we do not even get this far. If the product or service is retailable, but little corporate or field focus is placed on retailing, A2 is flawed, possibly not in the design, but surely in the implementation. Some things to look for: Does information exist in paper or electronic form specifically designed to assist the retailing effort? Does training exist to assist the field in its retailing efforts? Is retailing discussed in opportunity meetings or on web pages if the company is primarily e-commerce driven? Once the lack of actual retailing activity is identified, the risk of C2 being deemed illegal greatly increases.

C1 and C2 are separated on purpose. It is a critical separation for legal positioning. The existence of a viable income opportunity, without the necessity of recruiting more income opportunity seekers, is absolutely essential. Simply stated, one test for the legality of a multilevel income opportunity is a single-level analysis. Can money be made by the income opportunity seeker without sponsoring? The form of the single-level income opportunity is not as important as the substance. Traditionally, the representative’s first way to make money is to keep the difference between what he/she pays for the product and what is received for the product when he/she resells it. This “two passages of title” method of distribution has been replaced to a great extent by the representative being a “customer finder” and the company performing direct fulfillment. The e-commerce revolution may totally obsolete the “two passages of title” method of distribution. Some companies add to the first profit opportunity an additional profit opportunity in the form of bonuses, rebates, or commissions. The key to the C1 analysis is that sponsoring of another “participant” must be optional. There must be a place in the compensation plan for the non-sponsoring income opportunity seeker. If the ONLY way an income opportunity seeker can make money is to bring to the company more income opportunity seekers, the plan is fatally flawed. It is an endless chain. The argument that it “really is not” an endless chain, when you carefully examine the design and read all the fine print, will not hold up if the field force presents it only as a sponsoring opportunity. The fine print does not save the day. How a plan is implemented carries much more weight than how a plan is designed.

Some specific points need to be made about C2. No reward can be paid to the first representative for the act of introducing the second representative to the company. Such payments or rewards are called “headhunting fees” and are barred by law. No charge or required product purchase can be imposed on the second representative by the company or the sponsor as an entry fee. (A required purchase of an at-cost, non-commissionable sales or starter kit is permitted.) Simply put, neither the company nor the sponsor can profit from the sole act of recruiting. Profit to the company and profit to the representatives must come from the sale of products and services to customers, and only from the sale of products and services to customers.

If, from the start, all of the points made above are addressed in the initial design and are monitored in the implementation, regulatory scrutiny is unlikely. When inadequate or no attention has been paid to A1, A2, and C1, the states with proactive consumer protection agencies are likely to start an investigation rather quickly. I advocate correct initial design and company-monitored, correct implementation. However, some companies getting off on the wrong foot can recover.

Fixing a flawed plan can be as easy as changing language in corporate literature, or as difficult as rolling out totally new and substantially restructured products, services, and methods of compensation, accompanied by massive nationwide retraining. Some companies have made these transitions, and others have died in the process. When the alternative is a cease and desist order in a key state, with more states to follow, hard choices must be made. The bottom line will be affected. Fickle representatives will jump ship. Some representatives seek out and work flawed plans for the quick monetary gain and are prepared to move on to the next one at a moment’s notice.

Patching up C1 and C2 is inadequate, without a corporate resolve to address A1 and A2. It starts with the company’s product or service. Long before M/L/M, around the turn of the century, someone said, “Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door.” The “making legitimate,” or “legalizing,” of an M/L/M plan under regulatory scrutiny can only be accomplished by going to the core. The core is the product or service being brought to the general public marketplace by the company, and, of course, how it is brought to the marketplace. The core is not the bells and whistles of the compensation plan.

If a flawed M/L/M plan is under attack, it must be taken most seriously. State and federal regulators are too savvy to accept wordsmithing patches without substantive changes to the way business is done. Often, distributor “leaders” want the simple formula of “get two who get two, et cetera, and cash those commission checks.” If, in the analysis above, A1, A2, and C1 are flawed, either in the design or the implementation, significant changes to the way business is done must be made. If few or no one will buy the company’s products or services, except to play the game, then the M/L/M plan will be attacked as an endless chain money game. The state or federal agencies will eventually hound the company out of business. What is often required to close or settle an investigation is a corporate marketing shift to a retailing focus, followed by field retraining. Corporate monitoring and verification that the changes are being implemented in the field are often required.

Since retailing is the legal answer to M/L/M longevity, finding the right products or services is critically important. But I am digressing from the legal perspective. To wrap up, I have looked for other paths through the jungle of laws and regulations regarding M/L/M. E-commerce increases the many variations of selling, but does not bring with it exemptions from anti-pyramid statutes. If another path exists that does not include or require these legal ABCs, I have not found it.

Spotting MLM Cutthroats

At the bottom of page 11 of Success In 10 Steps, you see a reference to "greed and ego.
Prospects don't come into this process thinking about "greed & ego". But if you have experience in MLM, there's a good chance you've already run into the problem. It's worthwhile pointing out that the greed & ego of sponsors and/or companies is one of the reasons so many prospects are never successful in network marketing.

It's important to have your radar up and operating sensitively.

This doesn't mean you search for some Pollyanna who lives their life only for others. Putting yourself first is the natural order.

What it does mean is that you MUST avoid sponsors whose goal is to be successful no matter who they have to step on. You want someone who is determined to be successful by creating those win-win relationships with others.

A lot of times, you can actually hear this in their voice and in what they say about the business and about others. One of these clowns once told me that 95% of all prospects were dead wood, and he just kicked them out of the way. Not only was he proud of it, but he thought anyone who didn't do that was a fool. What more could you possibly need to know about this guy?

So you've got to watch and listen and train yourself to spot "greed & ego" before you join a company where you are smack-dab in the middle of it. Your best bet is definitely to avoid it from the start. Once you are in a group dominated by the greed and/or ego of its leader(s), you are lost. It's a situation you must train yourself to see and walk away from.

Dear Michael Dlouhy,

There are a few actions you can take to ensure that everything
goes smoothly.

1. Log into your Go Daddy account and change the administrative
contact for each domain name to the email address you submitted
as the primary contact, ABUSE@MichaelDlouhy.com and
change the technical contact for each domain name to the
address you submitted as the secondary contact,
Mentor51@tampabay.rr.com.

This will ensure that you receive all warning messages. You
can modify your entire list of domain names at once (contact
Go Daddy's Customer Service Department at support@
supportwebsite.com or 480-505-8877 if you need help).

2. Check your email client software (Outlook, Outlook Express,
Eudora, Thunderbird, etc) to ensure that the "Customer Warning"
messages are not being filtered by any type of anti-spam feature
that your particular email client my employ.

The "Customer Warning" messages you receive are auto-
generated, many spam filters will not allow the delivery of
auto generated messages. Most email clients will allow you
to "whitelist" email messages from individual domain names
or email addresses so that any message from a whitelisted
domain name or email address is delivered. GoDaddy.com,
SecureServer.net, DomainsByProxy.com, abuse@godaddy.
com, support@godaddy.com, abuse@secureserver.net,
support@secureserver.net, abuse@domainsbyproxy.com,
and support@domainsbyproxycom should be whitelisted.

You should not have any problems since you have responded
to the warnings you have received so far, but you may want to
keep this in mind if you make any changes.

3. Monitor these addresses diligently and responding to any
warning messages. If the "Customer Warning" messages you
receive go unanswered for longer than 5 days the domain in
question is suspended. I would strongly recommend that you
assign someone the task of checking these addresses each
day and answering any warning messages immediately.

The subject lines for these warnings are hard to miss, they will
look like this: CUSTOMER WARNING - BIGMLMLIES.COM.

4. Implement some type of control or procedure that will
enable you to easily monitor and police your clients. Many
customers utilize a naming convention of some sort that
places an ID# or Ad# within the referral URL that will identify
the sender of the message. You may already have some
sort of payment system in place for identifying your clients;
many AEP participants tie this into their advertisement
identification or tracking scheme.

5. Notify your clients/affiliates that you are paying special
attention to this potential problem. Place a "No Spam" policy
on your site and/or notify your clients via email of this new
commitment to enforce this policy.

6. Set up an email inbox for your domain name so you can
receive complaints at Abuse@Your domain name.

From this point forward Go Daddy will supply your company
with each complaint we receive in order to allow you to enforce
Go Daddy's anti-spam policy. All that we ask is that you
terminate the services of any individual that cannot provide
conclusive proof of prior consent to receive the offending
message. Conclusive proof of prior consent can be provided
by supplying the information outlined below.

1. Your clients/affiliate will need to provide server logs showing
when the complainant connected to your clients/affiliates site
and subscribed, opted-in, or consented to receive marketing
information from your clients/affiliates. This information must
include the following:

* Time/Date of opt-in/subscription/consent.
* IP address of the web server the complainant used to
connect to your site.
* Referral URL.

2. Your clients/affiliate will need to provide a detailed explanation
of how the example email address was obtained, your clients/
affiliates are encouraged to provide a copy of any confirmation
messages, complete with header information that this individual
sent to your clients/affiliates when they consented to receive
marketing information from their company.

3. In addition to the information outlined above, your clients/
affiliate will need to forward all contact information they have
for this individual along with any other relevant information
that they feel supports their claim of prior consent.

We will then investigate the validity of the information that
your clients/affiliates provide. The complainant may be
contacted to verify and/or confirm any contact information
or subscription details. If the information your clients/affiliates
provide checks out, we can probably consider these situations
an example where the complainant may have forgotten they
consented to receive your client/affiliates message.

I've had my own mentor-coach in network marketing since 1991. One person actually once told me he thought it was a weakness for "people like you to admit that you need a coach to help you."

A weakness???

I replied that having a coach was (and is) one of the smartest things I have ever done.

Who would you want to get your coaching from? Somebody who has experienced it, or somebody who hasn't?

Many of the coaches today in network marketing have never built an organization. Or they built¬ it 5, 10, 15 years ago, but they can't build it today.

As the old saying goes, "if you can't do, teach."

So these network marketing coaches go out and teach people how to do what they can't do. What they did 10 years ago worked 10 years ago. But it doesn't work today.

So instead of being on the cutting edge of technology and learning (and USING!) the state-of-the-art in network marketing business-building, they¬ hold themselves up as a coach!

I've even seen one coach who shows you his huge downline genealogy. If you look closely, you'll notice it's from 12 years ago. He hasn't done anything since.

If you're going to be coached, you want to be coached by somebody who is doing it NOW, someone who is active today.

It's crazy, but there are even¬ "coaches" who promote it as a virtue that they no longer do network marketing. They'll tell you this lets them be objective. They'll tell you that you don't need to worry about them recruiting you into some other business.

Here is the truth: there's a lot more money in network marketing than there is in coaching - IF you can actually do network marketing, AND you can do the coaching anyway, while you're building your business.

So why isn't this person in network marketing anymore?

Easy. It's because they can't do it. Plain and simple, they can't build it.

It is completely insane to choose as your coach someone who is not currently successful at network marketing. You are being ripped-off, plain and simple.

I've even talked to a couple of these "unbiased" network marketing coaches who actually don't like network marketing. They don't believe in it. Yet they will gladly take your money to coach you to success in network marketing!

One more thing - 90% of these coaches tell you that YOU have to change. They say you have to get out of your comfort zone, become this "A" type personality. And THAT is the reason it doesn't work.

Those "A" personalities can go out and do anything and be successful at it. But 92% of the world can't do that. And when you go out there telling them they have to change, it's no wonder there's such a high failure rate in network marketing.

Here's what I think:

1. You're perfect just the way you are.

2. You need belief in yourself, belief in the business.

3. Learn some skills.

4. Take action.

And to coach somebody in network marketing, the biggest thing they need coaching on is their belief. They don't believe in the industry, their company, or themselves.

Most top business people have (or once had) a true mentor, someone who's done it before and knows what to do. The person with a mentor has a big advantage. Tom "Big Al" Schreiter, Michael Dlouhy and Sarah Thompson are my mentors today and are all actively building their own business TODAY. They have taught me how to build my business and I would be honored to be YOUR mentor, no matter what company you are in.

I have been in Network marketing since 1986 and ever
since then I was looking for the key or secret
ingredient to making it work.

I remember reading an article in The Network Marketing
Magazine one evening and thinking this guy sounded like
he knew what he was talking about. I had been buying
every tape and book I could possibly get to find the
secret to make my business work.

And every tape and book I listened and read always
left me disappointed. I was obviously missing something.

What is there in there that I was not getting.

So I downloaded the e-book this guy Dlouhy was offering
for free. I read the whole book that night and told my
husband I wanted him to read it too. I wanted to see
if he thought this guy was for real. Did he know what
he was talking about?

This was a Saturday night. By Monday I convinced my
husband we should call and talk with Michael Dlouhy.

We talked with Michael and what an eye opener that was.
We had been questioning the company we were with but
really did not know how to pinpoint what the real problem
was. We just knew there was something not right.

We were instructed to read our Policies and Procedures
and there it was. All the things we had been questioning
and wondering about but did not know how to get the real
answers. This was specialized knowledge and Michael Dlouhy
had it. Needless to say we left that company.

What we are taught in the Mentoring for Free System is
the most important education we could possibly get in
order to build a business for ourselves. We are taught
to understand the 5 Pillars a company needs to have in
place, how many people it takes to make $10,000/mth,
how to read Policies and Procedures and what seemed to
be the most important for a lot of us is to know "it

How To Steal an MLM Downline!

Watch out for your viperous MLM upline! They can get you good.

You need to make it a point to know who your upline is. I just spoke with a lady last night on a 3-way phone call. She was the first woman in this network marketing company who built so quickly that she went to the top of the payplan in 4 months.

Her upline was envious and jealous. And part of her network marketing strategy was NOT to read the company Policies & Procedures. Bad, bad combination.

Before You Ever Join Any Company, Thoroughly Read Your P & Ps

Before this lady built the program, she did tell the company that her fiance was promoting another MLM company.

But guess what? Her company's Policies & Procedures state that you cannot make any money from another network marketing company - not even an affiliate program! If you violate this provision, you can be terminated.

And these restrictions apply to everyone living in YOUR household!

Now to me, that sounds like you're an employee. If you're an MLM independent contractor, how can they put those kinds of restrictions on you?

Anyway, this lady build to the top of the payplan. She was rocking and rolling. Everything was great. She was about to receive a $7,000 bonus check for reaching the top of the payplan - first woman to ever do it -

- and all of a sudden her website is turned off. Everything is shut down. The company didn't even send her a letter.

Bad News From the Viperous Upline!

Her upline called and told her she was terminated because her fiance was in another program. She had already told the company they weren't married and that he was in another program. So it had nothing to do with her or her network marketing strategy, but because they lived in the same household, the company used that lever to get her out of the line of compensation.

The company views 2 people living in the same household as if the two people are the same. And they can do that because it's in the Policies & Procedures.

Isn't that amazing?

What are the chances the company would ever find out about this if not for the viperous upline? Because this lady just got terminated, her sponsor inherits her entire organization. It all rolls up.

The Upline Couldn't Build It Themselves," And Now They Don't Have To!

I know a number of network marketers who have lost everything, because they never read their Policies & Procedures. Go to your company website right now, and read your P & Ps. You may be astonished at what you find.

FACT: When you joined your company, you checked a box stating that you agreed to abide by each of those P & Ps. But I'll bet you never actually read them!

Which reminds me of a trap that a lot of network marketing reps fall into. They think, "Well, everybody I know is violating this rule. The company must not care." Believe me, you can violate any rule you want, so long as you're not making any money. But once you start to build a significant income, THAT is when it's worthwhile for your viperous upline - or your company itself - to terminate you for violation of your Policies & Procedures.

Florida - I was the oldest daughter of 12 children. I worked a lot from the time I was very young. But everything I made went to support the family. Since I was a little girl, I always wanted to be free.

Later, While raising four children of my own, I signed up with the latest, greatest, can't-fail home-based business. I had house parties and called on family members, with no results. I switched companies and tried calling Aunts, sisters and cousins to buy my weight-loss products. No success.

I got divorced. After night school, I got a lucrative corporate position in the late 1980's. But it turned out not to be the dream I wanted.

Back to Network Marketing. I studied, analyzed and joined countless programs. I was told

1. Buy leads.
2. Make a list of friends and family.
3. To be successful, I'd have to get 100 "no"s in order to get one "yes".
4. Make more calls.

After 14 failed attempts, spending thousands of dollars for guru "secrets", I was pretty discouraged.

In late 2007, I ran into "Success in 10 Steps" by Michael Dlouhy. I looked at the table of contents and thought, "Huh? Where is step 1, step 2, and all the other steps?" The chapters had titles like ëYour warm market has ice in their veins," and "Give your prospects a puppy".

Oh, right, Michael. This is REALLY going to help. NOT!

A few days later, the phone rang. Michael Dlouhy himself is calling me?? Must be someone using his name. Must be a sales call. Somehow he must know I have a few dollars left on my credit card.

We talked for a few minutes. He invited me to listen in on a free training call. Weird. He never tried to close me.

He called again, a few times. I was suspicious. But still no closing. At least it didn't cost anything. And somehow he began to make sense.

He called again and tells me he knows I am quiet, need data and then more data, that I'm slow to decide, well organized, and do not like calling leads. What is this guy, a mind reader? He says, "Sarah, you're perfect to do this business just the way you are." Now he has me. But I refuse to let him know.

Next call, I break. I tell him about my 14 failed attempts, my lead buying, my collection of no's, and how all 14 uplines told me I was not working hard enough.

Michael patiently explains how to evaluate an MLM company. Bam, wow I get it! My failure in MLM really was not my fault. So I ask, "How much to continue, Michael?" I mentally brace myself for his reply. "No payments. But you have to follow our training program."

After the call, I get an e-mail with four audio links, and no place credit card numbers. I listened to the audios several times. I have a notebook full of notes. On the next call, I asked questions. Hmm. Sounds like the real deal. I start to attend the training sessions. I get addicted.

Michael calls again. Now, it's like we're old friends. He says " Sarah, Linda and I will believe in You until You believe in Yourself" The most powerful words he could have said. How did he know I did not believe in myself?"
That is exactly what Michael and Linda did - they loaned me their belief until I found my own. It worked, simply worked, because it is simple and true.

of Network Marketing?

Good grief. Gag me with a spoon.
I knew the man before he became "St. Michael."
You need to read THIS story ...

I have strong disagreements with Michael, but it’s not personal. I’ve known him since 1997. In person, away from business, he’s a charming, lovable character. Fun, sort of. Almost cartoon-like.

For some reason I can’t quite put my finger on, many people are drawn to him. My wife, for instance. Cheryl thinks he’s great.

Me? I’m at my wits’ end. Michael Dlouhy rubs me the wrong way. Before you think I’m petty or nasty or vindictive, let me tell you some things. This guy is going to irritate the snot out of you, too:

1. Michael Dlouhy spends 7-10 hours a week teaching his own network marketing COMPETITORS every secret he knows. He gives them FREE every tool he uses. His phone calls & e-book show them EXACTLY, step-by-step, how to take business away from him (as if they could) … and then he doesn’t even charge them for the training! (You’ll learn his reasoning for this in a couple minutes.)

By all rights, he ought to be standing at some big intersection with his spray bottle, dashing out at red lights, washing your windshield. Heck. He’d probably do THAT for free, too.

Here’s his motto: "Take everything I’ve got. Please." Michael trains his own people. He trains people from other companies. He trains people in his own company, but not in his group. It’s all free.

It’s all nuts.

But what aggravates me no end is, it works. He spits on the time-tested rules of direct marketing. He makes an absolute fool out of every MLM "Heavy Hitter" on the planet. As incredible as it seems from the way he does business, my suspicion is, next thing he does is fire up his Harley and head off to the bank, saddlebags stuffed with cash.

Life isn’t fair. Why the heck isn’t he bankrupt?

2. Michael’s entire income comes from his MLM business. Yet on his conference calls, he NEVER mentions the company name. He NEVER says a product name. He trains his people to NEVER close a sale. He trains them to NEVER recruit. He tells them to NEVER promote to friends & family. And yet they move a TON of product, and they build like crazy!

Is this any way to run a business?

Listen. I’ve talked to a bunch of his people. I know his motivation. Michael tells them how he was abused as a kid. His Aunt Honey rescued him and loved him. And now he wants to be Aunt Honey to all these abused network marketers.

Oh, brother! Wouldn’t Dr. Phil have a field day with this?

If you liked "The Brady Bunch", you’ll love Michael. Bright and cheery 99% of the time. Only when the subject turns to MLM "Heavy Hitters" and direct marketers, THAT is when he gets fire in his eyes and nitroglycerin in his veins.

In his e-book, he catalogs every lie they’ve ever told. What drives him is helping all those who’ve dreamed entrepreneurial dreams, and then been fleeced & abused by the evildoers. So when he gives everything away ... it’s an "in-your-face" to the Heavy Hitters.

Heck. Nothing wrong with that. Strong motivation. That’s good. But then he should stick to the profit basics.

Instead, off he goes, riding over the countryside. It's The White Knight of Network Marketing, Sir Michael of MLM.

Gag me with a spoon.

And what's he doing? Saving the dreamers from ... WHAT? Now it's MLM VAMPIRES!?

The man has gone round the bend.

3. Michael leaves wonderful, wildly profitable MLM marketing systems on the curb if he can’t use them to build others. People instantly relate to him. They trust him. They’re loyal as all get-out. He makes relationship-building look way too easy. And he trains his people to use his e-book do the same thing.

Michael refuses to acknowledge that business is about profit. If there’s one business certainty, it’s the bottom line. Profit or die. Period.

But Michael is totally unreasonable about this. Oh, he’d never be so rude as to "correct" me when I tell him these things. He just politely listens and then continues to do exactly what he was going to do anyway, which is to build people.

Michael has a thing about numbers. So I’ve told him, "It’s great that you care about people, Michael. But the numbers say, most people fail in network marketing. The numbers say, if you bet everything on your people and they fail, then YOU are down the tubes. The problem with people is, they’re VERY unpredictable.

"But product marketing systems are VERY predictable. We can set up a product marketing system, test it, tweak it, and figure out what gets good performance numbers. Then we can just ride that profit train. It’s much more sensible than betting on people. What if your people don’t make it? What if they don’t build?"

And you know what he tells me?

"They will."

What kind of a Pollyanna answer is that?

4. He comes into MY home, into MY living room, sits in MY chair, and thinks he can outsmart me.

Michael lives 200 miles away. So when he’d call to ask if he could drop by, I knew I was going to get a hard sell. I had my excuse list ready.

Then he’d show up and talk with Cheryl & me. I have to admit, he can be a warm and engaging storyteller.

And no hard sell.

It’s worse.

He just sits there and INTENTIONALLY listens to me.

Very irritating. I’ve heard his Colors training. I know exactly what he’s doing. He doesn’t fool me for a minute. Even so, it’s tough not to blab your head off when someone gets as interested in what you’re saying as Michael does.

So I talk. He listens. He figures me out. Believe me, he LOVES to have that advantage.

5. He doesn’t know when to quit. Michael knew EXACTLY how much he annoyed me, yet he still emailed and called and dropped by from time to time, letting me know that it was perfectly OK if I wanted to work with him … OR NOT!

So it’s OK if I work with him. And it’s OK if I don’t. That’s just wonderful.

I don’t need the aggravation. Really. I didn't give a rat's ass about Michael Dlouhy. Why the heck should he care about me?

And right there, THERE is my problem. I’m very curious.

Several people have told me they lost money in MLM for years before connecting with Michael. Now, they’re profitable. Despite his craziness.

How can that be? How can you give everything away and make a profit?

I had to know. I called him up. We had a very long talk.

And I’m glad we did. Because now I understand better why he does what he does in network marketing. There really is a method to his madness.

Let me give you one example.

Remember how he gives everything away to his competitors, free of charge? He does that because he knows this business. MLM companies come, go and change like crazy. Michael knows that when he builds trust with people, he’s sowing the seeds for working together in the future. Just because a person is in love with their company today doesn’t mean they will be a month or a year or 5 years from now.

And whenever they’re ready to make a change, Michael’s door is open. Good plan, actually.

And, as it turns out, he has a lot of good plans. It shocks me to say this. But the conclusion is inescapable.

Simply, Michael Dlouhy is a networking genius. He is to relationship-building and network marketing what Muhammed Ali was to boxing, what Elvis was to rock ‘n roll, what Bill Gates is to the personal computer. These kinds of people don’t do things the way they’re supposed to. Rules just get in the way of their creativity and obsession with their work.

It took me years to realize what I hate most about Michael Dlouhy. It’s EXACTLY what makes him unique. Michael does not follow anyone else’s rules. He’s almost like a Mother Teresa, searching through the network marketing woods, looking for the orphaned, injured baby MLMer. He takes it in, bottle-feeds it and nurses it to health.

In some ways, Michael is still 6 years old. He thinks every network marketer out there is Bambi, and he’s got to protect them from the Hunter.

6. There are days (I swear this is true) he calls me at 9 am to talk about some marketing idea. I can’t reach him in the afternoon, because he’s on the phone for an hour and a half doing a 3-way call with someone on his 74th level, who he just MUST help. At 8 pm, he’s doing his nightly 1-hour training call (or 2 or 3 hours, depending on how much help his people - AND his competitors! - need). And then he emails me at 3 a.m. When the heck does he sleep?

I once asked Linda Dlouhy when her husband sleeps.

Her answer?

"He doesn’t."

THIS one is personal.

Why should I feel guilty about getting a good night’s sleep?

But in the middle of the night, from the deepest sleep, I suddenly sit bolt upright in bed, eyes wide, sweat dripping, picturing Michael Dlouhy getting ahead of me. He's already on the phone, or at his computer sending emails, or out somewhere saving baby entrepreneurs.

I do a lot of work. I get a lot done. I work hard. But he never stops. He really pisses me off.

7. Michael Dlouhy couldn’t legitimately "market" his way out of a paper bag.

I know a thing or two about direct marketing. I was in marketing guru Jay Abraham’s "Protégé" group, back in 1989.

In 1990, I worked briefly with direct mail geniuses Gary Halbert & John Carlton, writing sales letters for some of Gary’s clients.

In 1993, I got a call from Dr. Joel Wallach at the old "Eagle Investments" MLM. Doc asked me to help him promote his "colloidal mineral" product. I took one of Doc’s old seminar audiotapes gathering dust in his closet, titled it, "Dead Doctors Don’t Lie," and began promoting it. Eventually, over 200 million "Dead Doctors" tapes were circulated. It’s still the benchmark against which all other network marketing promotions are measured.

In 1996, I wrote the full-page ad, "I REALLY Expected To Be Dead By Now!" This ad appeared in numerous national magazines and many direct mail packages … along with my book, "The Strangest Nutritional Secret!" These pieces brought us a couple million dollars net over the next few years.

Michael, on the other hand, has never created ANYTHING like these pieces.

All he does is build relationships with people, and then he teaches them to do the same thing.

"Build people. People will build your business."

Michael must say THAT 20 times a day. So instead of some mile-wide, inch-thick marketing thingy, he now has tight relationships with hundreds of people who would follow him anywhere.

That absolutely is NOT direct marketing. But it sure makes me wonder if he’s back there behind the curtains, the Wizard of Oz, pulling the levers - laughing at ME!

8. Which brings me to why I REALLY hate Michael Dlouhy. Because as I watch what Michael is doing now, and as I talk to many of his people, I have a realization:

EVERYTHING I did back in the ‘90s, ALL the success, WAS A MISTAKE!

I don’t believe I’m saying this.

Trust me – I’m not being humble. I look at me back then, and I look at Michael, now, and it’s the only logical conclusion. I was using Direct Marketing tactics to do Network Marketing. It worked great, right up until it crashed and burned and our income perished.

Listen. I was never arrogant. In many ways, I was stunned by success. But I did think it meant something. I thought it meant I knew what I was doing.

Wrong.

Oh, I could market, all right. But I didn’t build relationships. I would never, ever shoot Bambi. But I’d never give her my phone number, either. Let alone go out in the woods and search for her.

So I had a direct marketing mindset, and I was doing a network marketing business. It was doomed from the start. I made a lot of money. So did many of our people. But then, suddenly, it fell apart.

Had I built people rather than income, that business would still be going strong today.

Live and learn.

So here I am, years later. I find myself working with Michael, learning from him.

It's not always easy. We have very different viewpoints. I've been in this industry, off and on, for almost 30 years. And it's definitely tough to teach an old dog new tricks.

But Michael has certainly convinced me that to build an MLM that lasts, you MUST build relationships. You MUST build people. I’ve learned that from him, and I appreciate it.

Look. I won't go into details. But Michael has PROVEN to me that he is 100% committed to my success using his system.

Pretty smart. Astonishing, really. He's turned me from a skeptic into a raving Michael Dlouhy fan.

After all these years, I now have a mentor. If you’re smart, you’ll let Michael teach you, too. He will train you every inch of the way until you're successful in MLM.

I recently came across this question and thought it was worthy of addressing.

"What is a decent work from home company and not a scam?"

To all the Mom's and Dad's out there who just want to stay at home and keep the home fires burning for their family, I applaud you and want to do my part to help you make that happen. Being a positive role model and mentor in this generation can only create a better world for our children's children.

When my children were young, I started a child day care in my home so I could stay at home with my children. I raised four, two boys and two girls. They are adults now and I have 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. I loved being home with my kids.

As they grew and went off to school, and found work outside of the home. It seemed necessary for me to continue working to make ends meet.
Three years ago my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer. I wanted to be back home again and started to look for something I could do from home.

I ran into lots of options and lost lots of money. They are not all equal and yes, there are a lot of scams and illegal deals out there. Please, please do yourself a big favor. Put your credit card in the freezer! Do your homework, read the policies and procedures. Know what you are signing and get your questions answered.

So, in answer to the question, if you are looking for a good company to work with start here and learn "HOW" to think for yourself. Don't listen to people who don't have what you want. Rather listen to people who "HAVE" what you want and do what they do. Do your home work first before joining any company.

My experience with home based business started out very bad.

Everybody has opinions and ideas. Some are good. A few are great. Everyone wants to be part of a successful team.They get excited if their ideas help create success. It’s worth your time to really listen to and examine the ideas of others. Spot the really good parts and pull them out, acknowledge the person, and make their idea a part of the team plan. What else could you do that could ever cement relationships better than to celebrate and put into practice the thoughts of your team members?

It can be easy to fall into the habit of looking for the problems with somebody else’s thinking. What could possibly sabotage a relationship quicker than that? It’s important to police your own thinking regularly, so you don’t dismiss someone else’s idea. Look for the truth in what they said. Look for the unique angle that you can graft onto another idea and which suddenly creates magic.

It all starts with really listening to others. It sounds like such a simple thing … but so few people actually do it. When you practice really listening, you will understand people better. More than that, they will be drawn to you because they see you as a caring person. And then when you actually hear their idea and incorporate some part of it into your team approach in some way … that demonstrates to them how much you value them. When they have that relationship with you, it’s very, very difficult for them to ever make the decision to leave you and join somebody else’s group.

THE LEGALITY TEST!

The networking industry has many choices of business programs, but they all are NOT legal. Did you know that some programs are designed to fail? That's right! Some people actually create programs knowing they are NOT legal, and knowing in time they are going to be put out of business . . . but most likely they will cease to operate way before that happens due to what the owners will proclaim as internal problems. Basically, they simply cease to exist and you never ever hear from the owners again . . . that is until they create another business with another name.

Those of us who make our living because of the network marketing industry know the importance of working for our future as well as our present. That is why serious business entrepreneurs MUST choose a company that is totally clean . . . totally legal in every sense of the word. No stones must be left uncovered. Our time must be spent promoting what we feel good about, not worry about whether the company is legal or not. That is why it is imperative you choose, as your company, one that passes the MLM legality test.

WHAT MAKES MLM LEGAL?

There are many characteristics, or "red flags" that distinguish an illegal pyramid from a legitimate multi-level business opportunity, (often shortened to MLM.) They have been written about often in many publications and by necessity often contain legal terms and industry jargon. Also, danger signs of a few years ago may have been camouflaged or fixed by the newest drafters of plans so one needs to be on guard for new and different twists. Is there a simple, easy to apply, test one can give to a business opportunity, that addresses the pyramid law risk without all the pyramid law legal terminology? There is. What follows addresses that need. It is the single-level test for the multi-level business opportunity.

Ability to MAKE Money Through Customer Sales is IMPORTANT!

It goes like this: Can one make some money SINGLE-LEVEL, that is, without sponsoring another business opportunity seeker? Note the specific use of the word "can", not the word "would". It is usually a given that the business opportunity prospect is urged to sponsor, and that the business opportunity presenter will say or imply that the "real money" is in building a group. But that is O.K., SO LONG AS - those who choose not to sponsor at all, CAN STILL MAKE MONEY. Note also the use of the word "MAKE". It's "MAKE MONEY" not "SPEND MONEY", meaning paying income taxes if the gross income exceeds expenses associated with producing the income. Buying for personal use at distributor prices rather than customer prices, while a savings, does not generate INCOME upon which one is required to pay taxes. Buying for personal use by itself is not an income opportunity. If the proposed business opportunity consists ONLY of buying for personal use and sponsoring more representatives, with no provision for sales to customers, it is flawed.

MORE than Personal Consumption to Pass the Test

This simple test needs to be applied to two aspects of a business opportunity. The first aspect is the design. What do the company documents say about how one makes money? How does the compensation plan work? Not all the fine details of every commission, bonus or reward need be understood, but simply, can one make SOME money without sponsoring. Remember, one does not MAKE money when one buys any product or service for personal use. The application of this test should in no way imply that there is anything wrong or illegal about personal consumption. It is just that it alone cannot be the sole basis for a business opportunity.

How is the Plan Being TAUGHT?

The second aspect of the application of the test is the plan implementation. Some plans are designed correctly but are flawed in the implementation. Can one make money, even without sponsoring, as the plan is being taught and implemented by the prospective sponsor and the distributors closely associated with him or her? If there is no acknowledgment or support for the non-sponsoring participant in the business opportunity, something is wrong, maybe not in the design, but surely in the implementation. Reputable and legally designed and implemented multi-level business opportunities provide a money making opportunity SINGLE LEVEL to those who choose not to sponsor. Of course, if one sponsors others, then ADDITIONAL money making opportunities exist when those sponsored generate sales.

If the ONLY WAY to make money is by sponsoring, STAY AWAY!

Apply this test to multi-level business opportunities. Look at the plan design, and look at the way the plan is being implemented by the prospective sponsor and associates. If the ONLY WAY to make money is by sponsoring, STAY AWAY, the plan is fatally flawed.

So, what is Your Freedom Factor? It's your answer to Question#3. Your Freedom Factor is "The Factor" that allows you to "Own Your Life". In this case, your Freedom Factor is the amount of money you would need invested in real estate, in the bank, in the staock market, ect. in order for you to become financially free.

What would be easier to do in the next 5 years?
1) Save $1 million, that's $16,000 a month after you pay for food, gas, utilities, credit cards, mortgage or rent, car payments, insurance, etc. The 1 million you saved would give you a royalty income of $5000 a month ($60,000 a year). Whether you went to work or not, you'd get that money.
OR:
2) Learn a proven duplicatable system that would generate $5000 a month ($60,000 a year) in royalty income for you.

Don't Laugh - $110 Billion A Year Is Serious Business!

"SO, WHAT IS NETWORK MARKETING?"

Network Marketing is defined as a distribution channel - nothing more. But, unlike traditional distribution channels, Network Marketing allows people like "YOU" and "ME" to share in the massive profits.

Network Marketing is responsible for $110 Billion in global sales - every year. That's more than the global sales for Coca-Cola, FedEx, General Dynamics and Microsoft - combined. Wow! I had no idea how massive the profits really are.

So, if a product costs 10 cents to produce, why does it cost $1.10 in the store? I'm told that the cost of getting a product from the manufacturer into the hands of the customer typically adds 90% to the cost of the product. On the way to the customer, a product passes through the traditional distribution model, the price is marked up and each party takes a profit along the way.

Some companies pay celebrities like Beckham, Paris, Tiger, or Angelina. Some companies pay YOU instead. Network Marketing companies are similar to traditional companies in that they both have office buildings and both have corporate officers and staff. However, a traditional company might pay celebrities $50 million to endorse its product. Instead of paying celebrities, a Network Marketing company pays YOU for recommending and promoting their products.

There are two types of companies in the world. Those who pay celebrites to endorse their products and those who pay YOU instead.

In 2006, the top 25 athletes got paid $702.4 million for product endorsement.

Instead of paying celebrities, Network Marketing companies pay that money to people like you and me (distributors) to share their product.

And the best part is they don't just pay us one time, they pay us a Royalty Income. For as long as the customer continues to buy the product, they continue to pay us! Do the work right one time and get paid over and over and over again for years.

On the side of caution however, not all Network Marketing Companies are alike, I recomend that you do your home work before joining a company. Make sure you have read the policies and procedures before you sign on the dotted line or check I Agree.

The 5 Pillars Of Success

When evaluating a network marketing company, one must take into account all "5 Pillars of Success." Without all five Pillars, your success may be temporary through no fault of your own.

I like to compare it with baking an apple pie. You need 5 basic ingredients, right? You need a pie plate, a crust, some apples, sugar and spices, and the oven to bake it. What would happen if one of those ingredients were missing? Well, ya, it wouldn't turn out!

Well the same is true for a Home Based Business. You need all "5" Pillars to find the success you are looking for. Please, please, please, do your home work first. Don t fail like 98% of network marketers. Learn to build your business with ease and consistency and with a solid foundation.

Pillar #1 Company - Look for in a solid Home Based Business Opportunity is a Company with integrity. Does the company management have rock-solid experience backed with unquestionable integrity?
How many years combined "in the field" and "corporate" network marketing experience do the founders of the company have? Are the policies & procedures "distributor friendly?"

Pillar #2 Timing - Look for is the Timing in the company. Timing in the profession of network marketing. Timing within national and global trends. Is the company in the early stages of growth? How many countries is the company in? Network marketing is poised to grow faster today than ever before in history. Are the products focused on a large expanding market?
Did you know the Wellness Industry, is projected to grow to one-trillion dollars by the year 2010.

Pillar#3 Products - Are the products so good that people will buy them even without a compensation plan attached to them? Are they unique, consumable and at a price that makes them easy to share with others?

Pillar#4 Compensation Plan - Does the compensation plan fairly reward the part-time person and not just the top builders? Studies show that 96% of your team will be made of part-time people. An innovative 'streamlined model' will allow for a higher total payout percentage. Both full-time and part-time distributors will be extremely well rewarded for the results they produce.

Takes about two minutes. Might make you a lot of money, might not. Want to hear it?

Great!

If you never had to go to work again, would that be okay?

You might be thinking, "well ya, as long as I get a pay check!"
Well, I felt the same way. My job interferes with my life, I can't get the time off I need, and I spend way too much time commuting every day. So I decided to start some sort of home-based business so I wouldn't have to spend precious time away from my family

I got figuring....the way things are going with our economy, my 401K and social security just wasn't going to make the grade so I would have to keep working long after age 65.

This is not an option I am willing to accept, so I did some more figuring.... I only need about $30,000 a year to replace my take-home pay, so I went looking for a business.

You know how a lot of people are always dieting, drinking energy drinks like Red Bull, and a lot of people take vitamins and are interested in natural health?

Well, I figured there must be a dozen or so companies out there that do direct selling so I started looking. I discovered not only are there a lot of network marketing companies to choose from, there are also several compensation plans to choose from. And then there are a dozen or so different policy and procedure plans. Talk about mind boggling.

A friend of mine gave me this ebook. Not only did it open my eyes, this book has saved me from making more bad choices. After reading this book I learned how to evaluate a company and their pay plan. When I discovered that I needed a 5 pillars company to be successful and finally realized that my failure to succeed in the past, was not my fault.
